India is poised to make a significant leap in its technological capabilities with the planned launch of its first indigenous semiconductor chip, ranging between 28 to 90 nanometers, by the end of 2025. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced this milestone at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Annual Business Summit. Several major projects are underway to support this ambitious goal:

  • Micron Technology’s Sanand Facility: Micron is set to roll out its first batch of India-made semiconductor chips from its packaging unit in Sanand, Gujarat, in the first half of 2025. These chips will cater to sectors like data centers, smartphones, IoT devices, and automotive industries.
  • Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT): Tata Electronics is establishing a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Assam. Tim McIntosh, a veteran from Intel, has been appointed to lead operations, emphasizing Tata’s commitment to bolstering India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
