Huawei announced on Thursday, April 23, 2026, that it is significantly escalating its commitment to the smart-driving sector, pledging to invest over CNY 70 billion (~$10 billion) specifically for automotive AI and smart-driving technologies over the next five years.

For the current year (2026) alone, the company has earmarked CNY 18 billion ($2.6 billion) for R&D in this segment, marking a aggressive push to dominate the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) supply chain.

1. Investment Breakdown: The 2026 Roadmap

Speaking ahead of the Auto China 2026 (Beijing Auto Show), Huawei Senior VP Jin Yuzhi detailed how the 2026 budget will be allocated to maintain their technological edge.

  • AI Training Power: CNY 10 billion (~$1.46 billion) is dedicated solely to purchasing and maintaining the massive computing power required for AI model training.
  • Global R&D: The remaining CNY 8 billion will fund global research teams and the development of the Qiankun advanced driving assistance system (ADS).
  • Comparison: Huawei claims this single-year investment exceeds the combined smart-driving R&D budgets of all other major domestic Chinese solution providers for the same period.

2. Business Growth: The “Automotive Surge”

The massive investment follows a blockbuster year for Huawei’s Intelligent Automotive Solution (IAS) Business Unit, which has emerged as the company’s fastest-growing segment.

MetricFY 2024FY 2025Growth (%)
IAS Unit RevenueCNY 26.2 BillionCNY 45.0 Billion+72.1%
Total Huawei RevenueCNY 861.9 BillionCNY 880.9 Billion+2.2%
IAS Revenue Share~3.0%~5.1%
  • Profitability Pivot: After years of being a “cost center,” the automotive unit is nearing a break-even point due to the success of its HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) partnerships.

3. The “Qiankun” Ecosystem

Huawei is positioning itself as the “Bosch of the EV Era,” providing the underlying “brains” for dozens of vehicle models rather than building its own car.

  • 38 Models on Display: At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, 38 different vehicle models will feature Huawei’s smart driving or intelligent cockpit tech, including new entries from Audi and Toyota (specifically the BZ7).
  • Flagship SUV Launch: The Yijing X9, a six-seater flagship SUV co-developed with Dongfeng Motor, will serve as the market debut for the next-generation Qiankun ADS.
  • 1 Million Units Goal: Huawei’s joint venture with Seres (Aito) is targeting a production and sales volume of 1 million units by the end of 2026.

4. Addressing the Chip Crisis

A core part of the $10 billion investment is aimed at “chip sovereignty” to bypass ongoing U.S. sanctions:

  • Ascend 950PR: Huawei is optimizing its smart-driving algorithms to run natively on its own Ascend AI chips, reducing reliance on restricted Nvidia hardware.
  • Developer Growth: The Ascend ecosystem reportedly reached 4 million developers by the end of 2025, providing a massive talent pool for automotive software development.
