Instagram tests new app “Instants”

Meta has officially launched “Instants,” a new standalone spinoff app from Instagram, as of Thursday, April 23, 2026. Designed to compete directly with Snapchat, the app focuses on raw, unedited, and temporary photo sharing.

The app is essentially a rebranding and expansion of the “Shots” (or “Quicksnap”) feature that Meta had been testing internally and in select regions like Spain and Italy earlier this year.

1. Key Features: “Real Life, Real Quick”

Instants is designed to lower the pressure of the “perfect” Instagram aesthetic, favoring spontaneous interaction with mutual followers.

  • Camera-First Interface: Much like Snapchat, the app opens directly to the camera to encourage immediate capture.
  • No Edits or Filters: Staying true to the “raw” concept, the app does not allow for photo editing or the use of traditional Instagram filters. You can only add text.
  • View Once, Then Gone: Shared photos can only be viewed once by the recipient. If an image remains unopened, it automatically expires after 24 hours.
  • Anti-Screenshot Protections: Reports indicate that the app blocks or notifies users of screenshots to maintain the “ephemeral” nature of the content.
  • Mutuals Only: You can only send and receive Instants with people who follow you back (mutual followers), or limit them further to your Close Friends list.

2. Integration with Instagram

While Instants is a standalone app, it remains deeply tethered to the main Instagram ecosystem.

  • Shared Account: You log in using your existing Instagram credentials; there is no separate sign-up process.
  • Cross-App Viewing: Instants can be viewed either within the standalone Instants app or directly within the Direct Messages (DMs) tab of the main Instagram app.
  • Centralized Archive: While the recipient’s copy vanishes, your sent Instants are automatically saved to a private Instants Archive within your profile, allowing you to revisit your own “raw” moments.

3. Strategic Context: The “Snapchat Vendetta”

Analysts view the launch of Instants as Meta’s latest attempt to erode Snapchat’s core utility, particularly in regions where Snap’s growth has plateaued.

4. Availability (April 2026)

  • Android: The app saw a wide global rollout on the Google Play Store on April 23.
  • iOS: The rollout is currently region-dependent, with a primary focus on European and North American markets before a broader global release.
  • Naming Note: Internal code references discovered in February 2026 by researchers like Alessandro Paluzzi initially dubbed the project “Moonshot” before the final “Instants” branding was selected.
