WhatsApp is preparing to launch a significant security update that will finally allow users to monitor linked device activity in real-time.
Currently, you have to manually open the “Linked Devices” menu to see which laptops or tablets are connected to your account. According to reports from April 14, 2026, the new featureโdubbed “Activity for Linked Devices”โwill make this process passive and automated.
1. Real-Time Activity Monitoring
The core of this update is a live visibility system. Instead of just showing you a list of logged-in sessions, WhatsApp will now indicate which specific device is currently “Online” or “Active.”
- Simultaneous Notifications: If you are using WhatsApp on your primary phone and a linked device (like a laptop) becomes active at the same time, you will receive an instant notification on your phone.
- Unauthorized Access Detection: This is specifically designed to catch “snooping.” For example, if you leave your office computer on and someone starts reading your chats while you’re on the way home, your phone will alert you immediately.
- Secondary-Only Use: To avoid “notification fatigue,” the system will likely not ping you if you are only using the linked device and your phone is idle.
2. “Chat Lock” for Linked Devices
In addition to activity monitoring, WhatsApp has also begun rolling out Chat Lock for companion devices.
- Secret Code Sync: You can now set a passcode or secret code directly on your linked device (Web, Windows, or Mac) to hide sensitive conversations.
- Independence: Previously, locked chats were only “hidden” on your primary phone, meaning someone with access to your laptop could still see them. This update closes that loophole by requiring a code across all platforms.
3. Updated Device Limits & Rules
As of mid-2026, the rules for how these devices connect have also evolved to balance convenience with security:
| Feature | Current 2026 Standard |
| Max Devices | 1 Primary Phone + 4 Linked Devices |
| Standalone Use | Linked devices work without your phone being online. |
| Auto-Logout | Devices are logged out after 14 days of primary phone inactivity. |
| Inactivity Limit | 30 days of total inactivity on a linked device triggers logout. |
4. Why This Matters for Your Privacy
Since you have been monitoring fintech security and Indian market regulations, this move by Meta addresses a long-standing “silent” security risk:
- The “Forgotten Session” Risk: Many users log into WhatsApp Web at cyber cafes, offices, or friends’ houses and forget to log out. The new real-time alerts act as a “digital nudge” to clean up those sessions.
- One-Click Logout: If you receive an activity alert for a device you aren’t currently using, you can remotely log out that specific device with a single tap from your phone’s notification shade.
5. Rollout Timeline
The feature was spotted in the Android Beta (v2.26.15.6) earlier this week. It is currently in the “refinement” stage and is expected to reach the general public by late May or June 2026.
