OpenAI has officially launched the ChatGPT Library, a long-requested feature that introduces centralized, persistent storage for all uploaded and generated files. This update marks a fundamental shift in how ChatGPT handles data, moving away from “session-only” uploads to a model where files exist as permanent assets across your entire account.

Previously, files were tied to specific conversations and would effectively “disappear” if a chat was deleted. With the new Library, those files are now stored in a dedicated repository, similar to a simplified Google Drive or Dropbox interface within ChatGPT.

1. Key Feature: The “Files in this Chat” View

The most immediate change for users is the new “Uploaded files” toggle within the chat interface.

  • Contextual Access: Tapping this option opens a window titled “Files in this Chat,” which displays all documents currently active in that specific session.
  • Management: You can now see a preview of up to 30 recently used files, making it easier to reference or remove specific documents without scrolling back through weeks of conversation history.
  • Batch Uploads: The limit for concurrent uploads has been doubled; users can now attach up to 20 files in a single message (up from the previous limit of 10).

2. The Centralized “Library”

For paid subscribers (Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise), the Library acts as a persistent file manager accessible from the sidebar.

FeatureDetail
Persistent StorageFiles stay in your account until you manually delete them, regardless of chat history.
Automatic SavingAny PDF, spreadsheet, or image you upload—or that ChatGPT creates for you—is automatically archived.
Search & FilterA new “File Search” bar allows you to find documents by name or type across your entire history.
Bulk ActionsUsers can now download or delete files in bulk directly from the Library dashboard.

3. Expanded Storage & File Limits

OpenAI has adjusted the technical caps to accommodate larger datasets and more complex analysis.

  • Personal Storage: Individual Plus and Pro users receive up to 10 GB of persistent storage.
  • Organization Storage: Business and Enterprise workspaces receive 100 GB of shared storage.
  • Per-File Caps: * Documents/Text: 512 MB or 2 million tokens.
    • Spreadsheets: 50 MB.
    • Images: 20 MB.

4. App Integration: The “Unified” Google Drive

Coinciding with the File Library launch, OpenAI has unified its external file connectors.

  • One App Rule: Separate apps for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides have been merged into a single Google Drive app.
  • Syncing: Pro and Team users can now “sync” entire Google Drive or SharePoint folders. ChatGPT indexes these in the background, allowing for near-instant “Deep Research” across your external cloud data without requiring manual uploads for every chat.

5. Privacy & Data Retention

With persistent storage comes new data governance protocols:

  • Deleted Files: When you delete a file from your Library, OpenAI retains it on its servers for up to 30 days for recovery purposes before permanent erasure.
  • Training Controls: For Business and Enterprise accounts, data stored in the Library is not used to train OpenAI models by default.
  • Temporary Chats: Files uploaded during a “Temporary Chat” session are not saved to the Library and are deleted once the session ends.

Pro-Tip: You can now Cmd+click (or Ctrl+click) on a file in your Library to open its “Source View,” allowing you to see exactly which parts of a document ChatGPT is referencing for its current answer.
