Nothing to launch its own AI smart glasses in 2027

London-based tech disruptor Nothing is officially entering the wearable arena. Following a series of reports from Bloomberg and Android Authority this morning, the company has confirmed it is developing its first pair of AI-powered smart glasses, currently targeted for a launch in the first half of 2027.

The move marks a significant pivot for CEO Carl Pei, who as recently as 2024 was publicly skeptical of the smart glasses form factor.

1. The Design: “Transparent” Intelligence

True to Nothingโ€™s DNA, the glasses are expected to move away from the “bulky tech” look of traditional AR headsets, focusing instead on a lifestyle-first aesthetic.

  • Signature Look: Expect the brandโ€™s iconic transparent plastic frames, likely revealing the internal circuitry, microphones, and battery cells.
  • Glyph Integration: Rumors suggest a miniaturized version of the Glyph Interface (LED lights) may be embedded near the temples to signal when the AI is active or when a recording is in progress.
  • Form Factor: Unlike the Apple Vision Pro, these will resemble standard eyewear, aiming to compete directly with the Meta Ray-Ban series.

2. Hardware: A Companion, Not a Computer

To keep the frames lightweight and stylish, Nothing is reportedly offloading the “heavy lifting” to your pocket.

FeatureSpecification (Projected)
DisplayNone. (Focus is on Audio/Vision AI, not AR overlays).
CamerasDual-sensor setup for high-fidelity point-of-view capture.
AudioDirectional open-ear speakers and a multi-mic array.
ConnectivityRequires a Nothing Phone (Phone 3 or the upcoming Phone 4) for processing.
AI CorePowered by Nothingโ€™s new AI-Native OS, set for a 2027 debut.

3. The Strategy: The “Smartphone Killer” Beta

Carl Peiโ€™s shift in stance comes as he envisions a future where AI Agents replace the traditional grid of smartphone apps.

  • Intent-Driven: The glasses are intended to be the “eyes and ears” for your personal AI agent. Instead of pulling out a phone to book a cab or identify a landmark, you simply ask the glasses.
  • The Android XR Factor: Nothing is reportedly looking to be an early adopter of the Android XR ecosystem, positioning itself as the nimble, design-led alternative to Google and Samsungโ€™s more “corporate” wearable efforts.
  • Market Entry: The 2027 launch is described by insiders as a “market test” to see if Nothingโ€™s community is ready to transition from screen-based to ambient computing.

4. Whatโ€™s Coming Before the Glasses?

If you don’t want to wait until 2027, Nothing is using 2026 as a “bridge year” for AI hardware:

  • Nothing Ear (4): Expected in late 2026, these will be the first products to feature “Integrated AI Hub” capabilities, allowing you to trigger complex AI tasks via voice without touching your phone.
  • Nothing Phone (4a) Series: Launched in March 2026, these mid-range devices are already being used to test the first iterations of Nothing’s “Intent-Based” UI.
