In a rapid ascent that is disrupting the Indian ride-hailing market, the government-backed Bharat Taxi app has officially crossed 2.7 million downloads as of March 22, 2026. This milestone comes just over six weeks after its high-profile commercial launch by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on February 5.
The “Sarathi Hi Malik” Model
The app’s explosive growth is being driven by its unique “cooperative” structure, which positions it not as a private corporation, but as a driver-owned utility.
- Zero Commission: Unlike private rivals that take a 20–30% cut, Bharat Taxi charges 0% commission. Drivers pay only a flat daily access fee of ₹30, allowing them to keep nearly 100% of the fare.
- No Surge Pricing: The platform operates on a strictly surge-free model, ensuring predictable fares for passengers even during peak hours, heavy rain, or transit strikes.
- Driver Ownership: Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, drivers (referred to as Sarathis) are actual shareholders who receive annual dividends and have board representation.
Integration with “RailOne” Super App
A key catalyst for the recent surge in downloads is the integration with the Indian Railways’ new RailOne Super App.
- Last-Mile Connectivity: Starting March 18, 2026, passengers arriving at major stations like New Delhi can book a Bharat Taxi directly through the RailOne app.
- Seamless Transit: This integration allows travelers to sync their train arrival with a pre-booked cab, ensuring a “zero-wait” experience at the station exit.

Expanding the Footprint
Currently operational in Delhi-NCR and select cities in Gujarat (including Rajkot and Ahmedabad), the platform is preparing for a rapid nationwide rollout.
- Pune Launch: The Pune RTO recently confirmed that Bharat Taxi will hit the city’s roads by May 2026 to address local complaints about “arrogant” pricing by private aggregators.
- Nationwide Goal: Minister Amit Shah has set a target for the app to be available across all states and Union Territories within two years, from “Kashmir to Kanniyakumari.”
“This is the world’s first national mobility cooperative,” a senior Ministry of Cooperation official stated. “The 2.7 million downloads represent a vote of confidence from a public tired of unpredictable pricing and a workforce seeking dignity and ownership.”
