Google Maps gets new ‘Ask Maps’ AI upgrades

Google unveiled its most significant overhaul of Google Maps in over a decade. Powered by the Gemini 3 AI model, the update introduces two core features designed to move Maps from a “search and navigate” tool to an “intelligent trip assistant.”

1. “Ask Maps”: Conversational Search

The headline feature is Ask Maps, which replaces standard keyword searches with a chat-style interface.

  • Natural Language Queries: Instead of typing “electric chargers,” you can ask, “Where can I charge my phone without a long line for coffee?” The AI cross-references real-time business busyness data with place reviews.
  • Complex Trip Planning: You can provide a list of interests and ask for an itinerary, such as “Plan a 3-hour walk in Jaipur for senior citizens with minimal stairs and a great tea spot.”
  • Personalized Logic: Ask Maps learns your preferences over time. If you frequently visit vegan spots, it will prioritize those when you ask for “dinner recommendations” in a new city.
  • Availability: Now rolling out in the U.S. and India for iOS and Android.

2. Immersive Navigation: 3D Realism

Described as a “complete transformation” of driving directions, Immersive Navigation uses AI to bridge the gap between a 2D map and the real world.

  • 3.1D/3D Renderings: It fuses Street View and aerial imagery to create a live 3D perspective of your route.
  • Real-World Landmarks: Youโ€™ll see buildings, overpasses, medians, and crosswalks rendered exactly as they appear outside your windshield to reduce confusion at complex intersections.
  • Time Slider: You can preview your route at different times of day to see simulated traffic and weather conditions (e.g., “Show me this route at 6 PM in the rain”).
  • Availability: Initially launching for walking and cycling in the U.S., with vehicle integration (CarPlay/Android Auto) following shortly.

3. Additional AI Enhancements

FeatureDescription
Conversational VoiceGuidance now sounds more natural, using landmarks (e.g., “Turn left after the pink building”) rather than just street names.
Smart ParkingAs you approach your destination, Maps will suggest specific parking lots based on proximity and historical availability.
Lens in MapsExpanded to 50+ new cities, allowing you to lift your phone to see AR overlays of ATMs, restaurants, and transit stations.
Road DisruptionsReal-time AI alerts for unexpected lane closures or accidents, with clearer context on why an alternate route is being suggested.

New Branding

Coinciding with the update, Google Maps has also introduced a new logo. The iconic pin remains, but the design now features a four-color gradient (blue, red, yellow, and green) that matches Googleโ€™s broader Gemini and AI branding.
