NotebookLM now turns your notes, PDF into AI explainer videos

Google officially upgraded NotebookLM with a flagship feature called Cinematic Video Overviews.

This is a massive leap from the previous “narrated slides” format. Instead of just showing static pages, the new tool generates a fully animated, narrative-driven explainer video based on your uploaded PDFs, notes, and transcripts.

Key Features of Cinematic Video Overviews

The feature acts as an “AI Creative Director” for your research, moving beyond simple summaries into high-fidelity storytelling.

  • Full Animation & B-Roll: Powered by Veo 3, the system generates fluid animations, relevant B-roll imagery, and dynamic charts to illustrate your data.
  • Structural Storytelling: Gemini 3 acts as the director, drafting a storyboard and a script that includes a narrative arc, definitions for complex terms, and recaps of key claims.
  • Embedded Citations: Just like the text-based NotebookLM, every point made in the video includes a citation. Viewers can click to jump directly to the exact source passage in the notebook.
  • Customization: You can use “Steering Prompts” to set the tone (e.g., “Make a 3-minute technical briefing for engineers”) or choose from visual styles like Classic, Whiteboard, Paper-craft, or Anime.

How to Create Your Video

  1. Upload Sources: Add your PDFs, meeting notes, or web articles to a new or existing notebook.
  2. Open the Studio Panel: Look for the “Video Overviews” section in the NotebookLM Studio.
  3. Customize: Click the three dots and select “Customize” to input a steering prompt or select a visual style.
  4. Generate: Hit the generate button. The video is built in the background, allowing you to continue working.

Availability and Requirements

  • Subscription: Currently exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers (the $250/month tier).
  • Quota: Ultra subscribers can generate up to 20 cinematic videos per day.
  • Age & Language: Available only for users 18 and over and currently supports English only.
  • Platform: Accessible via the NotebookLM web interface and the mobile apps for Android and iOS.

The AI Tech Stack Behind It

Google confirmed that this feature uses a “novel combination” of its frontier models:

  • Gemini 3: Scriptwriting, narrative structure, and logic.
  • Nano Banana Pro: High-resolution image generation for visual elements.
  • Veo 3: Video generation, audio cues, and final animation rendering.
