BYD tests record-breaking 1,500 kW flash charger

On Monday, March 2, 2026, reports emerged that BYD is in the final stages of internal testing for its record-breaking 1,500 kW (1.5 Megawatt) Flash Charger at its headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

This hardware represents a roughly 3x jump in power over Teslaโ€™s V4 Superchargers (500 kW) and is designed to make charging an electric vehicle as fast as refueling a gasoline car.

“1 Second, 2 Kilometers”

The core promise of the new system is “refueling-speed” mobility. By pushing the boundaries of electrical engineering, the charger aims to eliminate “charging anxiety” for long-haul trips.

MetricPerformance Goal
Peak Power Output1,500 kW (Up to 1.5 MW)
Peak Voltage/Current1,000V / 1,500A
Charging Speed2 km (1.24 miles) of range added per second
5-Minute ChargeAdds approximately 400 km (248 miles) of range
Daily Utility2-minute charge adds ~240 km for standard commutes

Design & Infrastructure Innovations

The 1,500 kW system introduces a complete departure from traditional “pump-style” charging stations:

  • The T-Shaped Gantry: The chargers utilize a signature cyan-colored, T-shaped overhead structure. Cables are suspended from a pulley system, making the heavy, liquid-cooled “guns” feel weightless and allowing them to reach any side of the vehicle easily.
  • Liquid-Cooled Technology: To handle the massive 1,500A current without overheating, both the charging terminal and the cables are fully liquid-cooled.
  • Battery-Buffered Stations: To avoid crashing the local power grid, each station features “Peak Shaving” technology. Large on-site Blade Batteries store energy during off-peak hours and “blast” it into the car during a 5-minute session.
  • “Flash Charge” Ecosystem: A new Flash Charging App has launched on Android, supporting automatic “plug-and-charge” (no QR codes) and payment integration via Sesame Credit.

Compatible Vehicles

During current testing, the chargers are restricted to vehicles bearing a dedicated “Flash Charge” rear badge. These include upcoming high-voltage models:

  • Denza Z9 GT (Set for official debut on March 5, 2026)
  • BYD Tang 9 and Song Ultra
  • Seal 07
  • FCB (Fang Cheng Bao) Tai-series

Strategic Rollout Plan

BYD is planning a massive infrastructure offensive throughout 2026 to support its new hardware:

  • China: Targeting over 4,000 self-operated stations and a broader network of 15,000 sites via partners like XiaoJu Charging.
  • Europe: Plans to establish 3,000 fast-charging sites across Europe by the end of 2026 to support the international launch of the Denza Z9 GT.
  • Launch Event: The official presentation of Megawatt Flash Charging 2.0 is scheduled for March 5, 2026, alongside the reveal of the Second-Generation Blade Battery.
