Google releases 1st beta of ‘Android 17’

In a series of events that surprised the tech world, Google both announced and then abruptly delayed the first beta of Android 17 over the last 24 hours (February 11โ€“12, 2026).

While several publications initially went live with reports that the beta was available, Google quickly followed up to clarify that it is no longer releasing today and is instead “coming soon.”

The Android 17 “Aborted” Launch

The confusion stemmed from an embargoed announcement that was briefly published by major tech outlets before Google issued a last-minute postponement.

  • Current Status: Delayed. Google confirmed that “Beta 1 will actually be coming soon, not today.”
  • The Big Shift: Android 17 marks the end of the traditional “Developer Preview” era. Google is moving to a Continuous Canary Channel, allowing features to be battle-tested earlier before reaching the Beta phase.
  • Projected Timeline: Despite the delay, Google still expects to reach Platform Stability by March 2026, with a final stable release targeted for June 2026.

Whatโ€™s New in Android 17 (The Leaked Features)

Based on the documentation that was briefly made public, Android 17 focuses on “Adaptive Apps” and high-performance media tools.

1. Forced Adaptive Layouts

For the first time, Google is removing the “developer opt-out” for screen orientation and resizing.

  • The Rule: Apps targeting Android 17 must support windowed multitasking and orientation changes.
  • The Goal: To ensure a seamless experience on foldables, tablets, and desktop windowing environments. (Note: Games are currently exempt from this requirement).

2. Performance & Battery Efficiency

  • Generational Garbage Collection: A new system designed to reduce CPU usage and “stutter” during intensive operations.
  • Notification Restrictions: Smarter management of background notification processes to lower memory consumption.

3. Professional-Grade Media Tools

  • VVC Support: Native support for Versatile Video Coding (H.266), offering higher quality at lower bitrates.
  • Loudness Management: A new system-level API to standardize audio levels across different apps, preventing volume “shocks” when switching between videos or music.
  • Seamless Camera Transitions: Improved handling of multi-sensor camera switching to avoid freezes or glitches during zoom.

Compatible Devices

When the beta officially drops, it will be available for the following Pixel devices:

  • Phones: Pixel 6 series, 7 series, 8 series, 9 series, and the upcoming Pixel 10 series.
  • Others: Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel Tablet.

Important Note for Beta Testers

If you are currently on Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1, you will automatically receive the Android 17 update once it goes live. If you want to return to a stable build without wiping your data, you should opt-out now and wait for the final Android 16 QPR3 release in March.
