LG unveils CLOiD home robot prototype

LG Electronics brought the “sophisticated butler.” Unveiled as the centerpiece of their “Zero Labor Home” initiative, the LG CLOiDโ„ข is a humanoid-style assistant designed to transition home robotics from simple monitoring to active physical laborโ€”including folding laundry and prepping meals.

What is LG CLOiD?

Unlike previous “home agents” that were essentially smart speakers on wheels, CLOiD is a semi-humanoid robot featuring two highly articulated arms and five-fingered hands. It is built to interact directly with the LG ThinQ ecosystem, acting as the physical hands for your smart appliances.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

LG has packed CLOiD with “Physical AI,” a technology stack that allows the robot to understand and manipulate the physical world with human-like dexterity.

  • Humanoid Dexterity: Two arms with 7 degrees of freedom (DoF) each, allowing for natural movement. The five-fingered hands can perform delicate tasks like grabbing a single croissant or picking up a towel.
  • Variable Height: The robot features a tilting torso, allowing it to reach items on the floor or stretch up to kitchen counter height.
  • AI “Brain”: Powered by a Vision Language Action (VLA) model, CLOiD doesn’t just see objects; it understands their purpose. It can recognize an open fridge, identify a milk carton, and understand the command “make breakfast.”
  • Communication: A large circular display serves as its “face,” showing emotive expressions, while a built-in speaker and generative AI allow for natural, flowing conversations.
  • Mobility: A stable, three-wheeled base derived from LGโ€™s world-class robot vacuum technology ensures it can navigate household obstacles without tipping.

The “Zero Labor” Chores in Action

At the LG booth during CES 2026, CLOiD performed several live demonstrations that left attendees stunned:

  1. Laundry Specialist: After a wash cycle finishes, CLOiD can autonomously transfer clothes to the dryer and later fold towels one by one.
  2. Kitchen Assistant: The robot was seen retrieving items from an InstaView refrigerator, placing them in an oven, and even setting the table.
  3. Proactive Care: Using “Affectionate Intelligence,” CLOiD can detect if a user is stressed or tired and suggest a relaxing playlist or adjust the home lighting via ThinQ.

Price and Availability

As of its CES 2026 debut, the LG CLOiD remains a working prototype. While LG has not yet announced a formal consumer price or release date, industry analysts expect a high-end “Early Adopter” version to be announced late in the year.

“Our goal is to make housework a thing of the past,” said Steve Baek, President of LG Home Appliance Solution Company. “CLOiD is the first step toward a home that truly takes care of itself.”
